MLA Places John B. Moriarty as Chief Legal Officer & Corporate Secretary at Mirati Therapeutics, Inc.

Hanover, MD (June 28, 2023) — Major, Lindsey & Africa (MLA), the world’s leading legal search firm, today announced the placement of John B. Moriarty Jr. as chief legal officer and corporate secretary of Mirati Therapeutics, Inc. in San Diego. The search was conducted by Joanna Herman and Deborah Thompson, both partners with MLA’s In-House Counsel Recruiting group in San Diego and Philadelphia, respectively.

Mirati Therapeutics (NASDAQ: MRTX) is a public clinical-stage biotechnology company whose mission is to discover, design and deliver breakthrough therapies to transform the lives of patients with cancer and their loved ones.

As chief legal officer and corporate secretary, John will be a key member of the executive team with responsibility for directing and managing Mirati’s legal affairs. Reporting to the CEO and overseeing a growing legal team, John will also serve as a trusted thought partner and close advisor on legal, corporate, strategic, tactical, operational and compliance issues.

Most recently, John was executive vice president, chief legal officer and corporate secretary for Olema Pharmaceuticals, a development stage oncology company with a focus on breast cancer, where he was among the first 10 employees. At Olema, John helped lead the company through its 2020 venture financing and successful IPO, including building out the company and legal department. Previously, John was the executive vice president, general counsel and secretary for Portola Pharmaceuticals, acquired by Alexion Pharmaceuticals, where he oversaw the company’s legal and governance functions as well as served as Managing Director for the company’s Netherlands operations. Prior to Portola, he was executive vice president and general counsel for Alexion Pharmaceuticals across its 50-country operating platform during a period of multiple drug launches and significant value creation. John’s leadership at Alexion also included oversight and management of the company’s global government affairs and corporate communications teams. Previously, he was senior vice president and general counsel at Elan Pharmaceuticals in San Francisco and Dublin, Ireland, and started his inhouse counsel career at Amgen, where he supported the company’s commercial oncology business and helped lead the company’s litigation group.

He began his career in private practice and was appointed a healthcare fraud prosecutor with the Virginia Office of the Attorney General and the U.S. Attorney’s Office as a Special Assistant United States Attorney.
