Leading a team is more than having the skills to do the jobs on the team; it’s about meeting people where they are and bringing them along to succeed in their roles. Deb Steiner, who started out as a litigator, has grown in her career to lead not only legal but Human Resources, Environmental, Health and Safety, Corporate Communications, and Risk Management in her current role at RRD. In this episode of In-House Legal: Uncovered, she discusses with Michael Sachs what it takes to be a people leader, including sharing how that changed during the pandemic and what returning to the office has entailed.
Deb Steiner is an accomplished legal professional with over 20 years of leadership and legal counseling experience. From early in her career, she has held high-level roles in organizations reporting to top executives. As Chief Administrative Officer and Chief Legal Officer at RRD, a $5.0 billion Fortune 500 company, she oversees the company's Legal, Human Resources, Environmental, Health and Safety, Corporate Communications, and Risk Management functions. Deb provides instructional leadership to these areas, manages all Board and governance matters, and runs RRD's ethics and compliance program.
Prior to joining RRD in 2012, Deb spent nearly seven years working in government, primarily as a federal prosecutor. She also conducted internal investigations, managed complex litigation, and defended white-collar defendants for seven years at Latham & Watkins.
Deb lives in River Forest where she is a single mother to three children who were adopted from the United States and Uganda. When not trying to keep up with her three active kids, Deb enjoys reading, traveling, volunteering with nonprofits, and watching college football.
