Associate Satisfaction Regarding Firms’ Response to COVID-19, a survey of more than 1,335 associates from various-sized law firms around the world run in mid-April 2020, looks at how associates perceive their firms’ response to the current crisis.
The survey showed that:
- Job security and cost-cutting measures by their firms ranked among the top concerns of associates during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- 39.2% of respondents have seen a reduction in their workload—57.8% of real estate associates, followed by 42.8% of IP associates, 41.7% of tax associates and 39.8% of corporate associates. Despite this, an overwhelming majority of respondents (93.5%) reported that their billable hour target had not changed.
- 10.3% of respondents reported mental health as their top concern. When asked what other benefits or resources their firm can provide, the most common response was to decrease the billable hour requirement.
- About four times as many male associates were concerned about the impact on partnership track compared to their female colleagues. Meanwhile, three times as many female associates listed childcare as their top concern.
