Hanover, MD (November 8, 2022) — Major, Lindsey & Africa (MLA), the world’s leading legal search firm, announced the placement of James Matthew Vaughn as senior vice president and general counsel at Schnitzer Steel Industries, Inc. The search was conducted by Nancy Reiner, partner, and Amy Carlin, director, with MLA’s In-House Counsel Recruiting group in Boston.

Matt will serve as the chief legal officer for Schnitzer Steel and direct all its legal activities. He will be a key business partner to the executive management team and act as corporate secretary of the board of directors. He will also provide leadership and strategic legal and business advice in the areas of securities and corporate governance; corporate risk management; domestic and international business transactions; M&A and corporate finance; complex global environmental regulations; and litigation management.

Matt spent the last eight-plus years as SVP, chief administrative officer, general counsel & chief compliance officer for Par Pacific Holdings, Inc., where he was responsible for all legal, human relations, environmental, health and safety, loss prevention, insurance, and governmental and external affairs. Prior to going in-house, he spent nearly 15 years with Porter Hedges, beginning his career as an associate and later making partner. His practice focused on corporate reorganizations and restructurings, commodities marketing, transportation, hedging and derivatives, corporate acquisitions, finance, and general civil litigation. Matt earned his J.D. from the University of Miami School of Law and his B.A. from Texas A&M University.
