What attracted you to Major, Lindsey & Africa?
I was recruited by an MLA recruiter I had worked with several times and known for many years. She’s the most well-respected recruiter in my market (Tokyo), so once I decided to transition to recruiting, there was no question as to which company to join.
What is the best part of your job?
I love connecting candidates with opportunities they didn’t even realize were possible.
What is the most surprising part of being a recruiter?
Learning how little many candidates know about the market and their career options – so it’s really fun to provide that information that really everyone should have to make informed decisions.
How would you describe your career in 5 words or less?
Creating opportunities, learning, helping others
Describe one of your successes thus far at Major, Lindsey & Africa.
Establishing a relationship with a law firm in the US that is interested in hiring bengoshi (Japanese lawyers) to service their Japanese clients, because I’m excited to be able to offer that rare opportunity to candidates who have been asking for it.
What advice would you give to someone considering becoming a recruiter?
If you love talking to people and hearing their stories, and you’re good at staying on top of lots of moving parts and following up, do it! You may end up happier than you were in your previous career. But you also have to accept that becoming a successful recruiter is a marathon, not a sprint.
If you weren’t a lawyer or a recruiter, what career would you have had?
Therapist or I’d open a bakery.
What is on your bucket list?
Living in a house with a view of the ocean.
